Super Hydrophobic
A surface is considered super hydrophobic if a water droplet beads up (with a contact angle greater than 150°). Super hydrophobic surfaces repel water, causing it to form beads because it is more attracted to itself than the surface. This means water will run off the surface making it extremely difficult to wet.
This is known as the ‘lotus effect’ due to its similarity to the lotus leaf but is also seen on duck feathers and butterfly wings.
Mineral surfaces like roof tiles that are coated with ProPERLA Water Repellent respond in the same way, resulting in water forming droplets and running off the substrate without penetrating the surface.
Breathable
Roof tile sealers often refer to a waterproofing treatment that ‘seals’ the surface, creating a waterproof film on the roof tiles. ProPERLA is so effective as it does not have a restriction on the ability of the building or roof of the property to allow air and moisture to escape and breathe out. ProPERLA Water Repellent benefits from an SD (breathability rating) of 0.03. A coating is considered to be breathable if it has an SD value of 0.50.
A breathing roof will improve it’s insulation properties. Just a 5% content of damp in building materials can lower the thermal resistance by up to 50%. If a roof tile cannot breathe, a build up of moisture will occur underneath the surface, leading to irreparable damage to roof tile.

The superior technology of ProPERLA Water Repellent mimics the lotus leaf, repelling dirt and water to give a super hydrophobic effect, making roof tiles self-cleaning.
- Dirt particles are unable to obtain a hold on ProPERLA treated surfaces and will simply flow off with rainfall.
